Just like Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, the beachside city of Hervey Bay has finally found a heart.
After decades of lobbying, the Fraser Coast Regional Council has struck a deal with the Federal Government to create a town centre at Pialba, including a new library and distinct business centre.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the creation of a proper CBD had been a priority and on the agenda for decades.
“I’ve spoken to councillors from 25 years ago who show me old front-page stories of plans to revitalise the CBD and now, under the Hinkler Regional Deal, we’ve been given $40 million to make it happen,” Cr Seymour explained.
The chosen area is located close to the community centre at Pialba near Main St and Torquay Road.
“This provides a real focus and central heart for Hervey Bay,” he said.
In 1971, the population of Hervey Bay was only 10,000 people.
